The Climate in the south of the Sultanate of Oman

The Climate:

Oman is divided into two climatic zones. The north is characterized by a hot, dry climate, whilst the south and the region of Salalah, where our fishing trips take place, benefit from a tropical influence. The weather there is hot all year round – over 25°C – and the nights are mild.

There are only two seasons: summer, marked by a period of monsoons from June-July to September, and winter, with its dry season from September to April-May. Even though rainfall is low on the coast during the monsoons, the sea still gets choppy.

Consequently, it is best to go on a fishing trip in the wintertime, when the climate is more favourable and the temperature is around 28-30 °C.

What should you pack in your suitcase?

Don’t forget to bring along good, sturdy walking shoes for scrambling over rocks while fishing and hiking, as well as a wide-brimmed hat and sun cream to protect you against the hot sun! Gloves are a welcome fishing accessory – pulling in big fish can wreak havoc on the palms of your hands!

Choose summer clothing, preferably made from light-coloured cotton or linen, as town wear. It is best to wear clothes or short trousers which protect the whole body. Bring along a fleece to wear at night, even in town, where the air conditioning is always on. A chech will come in handy to protect you from dust, as will a poncho or windproof jacket when out at sea or in drizzle. Although the coastal winds chase away most mosquitos and insects, we would advise you to bring some insect repellent just in case.

Every great adventurer has a headlamp, a Swiss knife, some string and a lighter or flint on them. Please note that a camping knife combined with a fork and spoon can be very useful – certain restaurants do not provide cutlery since, traditionally, the locals eat with their hands. When you go camping, a small pillow, like the ones sold in airports, will give you a little more comfort. A quick-drying microfiber towel is also a good idea – it is cheap, light and very practical.
