Discover the best rigs for catching Bluefish, Grouper, Amberjack and Tuna on fishing expeditions

Several techniques can be used to catch Bluefish: dead/live bait fishing, jigging, plug fishing, or even surfcasting from a beach, rocks or a boat. We particularly like fishing for Bluefish because it puts up a good fight, and because it tastes delicious…when well cooked it just melts in your mouth!

List of gear tried and tested by our team
- Tenryu Fiber Jigging rod
- Fisherman Spinoza Short 5122 T rod
- Daiwa Saltiga Z5000 reel for jigging or bait fishing
- Daiwa Saltiga Hiramasa HB rod
- Alutecnos Gorilla 8V reel
- Tenryu Hurlante or Rugissante rod, even if we find them too limp to correctly animate certain lures. Indeed, when we pull sharply on the rod tip, the rod absorbs too much of the movement, which tends to tire you out very quickly….
- Zenaq Rouf Expedition 83S rod, our favourite!
- Zenaq Serie Fokeeto 80-5 rod, excellent for Big Game Fishing. Our team uses it when fishing with large stickbait, but it doesn’t have enough tip action to fish with small bait.
- Daiwa Saltiga 5500H Expedition reel
- Shimano Stella 8000 SW PG reel
- Varivas Avani Premium Jigging 10x10 PE4 or PE5 braided line
- Jerry Brown Decade Spliceable 60 lbs and 80 lbs braided line
- Nylon Asso Classic 120/100 or fluorocarbon trace

No need to thank us: we have tried this gear out for you to determine the best combinations!
And here are the rod and reel combinations we would recommend:
- Daiwa Saltiga Hiramasa HB rod with an Alutecnos Gorilla 8V reel
- Tenryu Fiber Jigging rod with a Shimano Stella 8000 SW PG reel
- Fisherman Spinoza Short 5122 T rod with a Daiwa Saltiga Z5000 reel
- Tenryu Hurlante and Rugissante rod with a Daiwa Saltiga 5500H Expedition reel, or with a Shimano Stella 8000 SW PG reel
- Zenaq Expedition 83S rod with a Daiwa Saltiga 5500H Expedition reel or even a Shimano Stella 8000 SW PG reel
- Zenaq Serie Fokeeto 80-5 rod with a Daiwa Saltiga Z5000 reel

The perfectionists among you will have noticed that some of these reels are generally intended for jigging, but that’s not a problem when fishing with large bait.

Rigs for plug fishing:
We would recommend using the very strong, self-tightening Pr Knot to attach the braided line to the trace. We would advise you to use a trace at least 1-1.5 m long; fluorocarbon line can also come in handy.

Here is a photo of the rigs:

Complete rig for plug fishing during your fishing trip to Oman
Flashmer American N°3 stainless steel snap: 28 kg, opened during a struggle with a fish during a fishing trip to Oman

It consists of a Nylon Asso Classic 120/100 trace, a Double Brass Tube 1.5 x 3.2 x 10 mm double sleeve and a Flashmer American stainless steel snap N°4: 48kg.

On the photo on the right you can see the damage inflicted on a Flashmer American stainless steel snap N°3: 28 kg, opened during a fight with a fish whilst rock fishing. We were peacefully fishing around 19h30, at nightfall. We were using a Tenryu All Rod Hurlante rod equipped with a Shimano Stella 8000 SW PG reel, and Varivas Avani Premium 10x10 PE4 braided line, with a Jackson Pintail tune EZ 115 sardine-coloured lure, when suddenly the reel began to spew out line. It was impossible to stop the torpedo attached to the other end!
The fight lasted 30 seconds and the snap gave way. From that day on, we stopped putting a knot between the trace and the snap because when we tighten it we tend to bend or weaken it, and we now use N°4 snaps!

Rig with Pintail Tune EZ 115 45 g for plug fishing during your fishing trip to Oman

Generally – and we’re speaking from personal experience – we tend to take loads of lures and don’t use the half of them. Here are two sure bets which will allow you to target Tuna, Bluefish, Grouper and Amberjack: Jackson Pintail Tune EZ 115 45 g and Jackson Pintail 10 cm 48 g. They cast brilliantly and are very strong. We would advise you to use Owner ST66 N°2 or N°1 treble hooks for the back. Here are two specimens used over a week’s fishing!!! There is a huge variety – feel free to come and test them!

Rig for bait fishing:
We like fishing with a Zenaq Expedition 83S rod combined with a Daiwa Saltiga 5500H or Shimano Stella 8000 SW PG reel. The rig is very simple to assemble, but you musn’t forget to take a few olive sinkers because the ones found in the villages aren’t great. They will, however, do the job if you’re really stuck.

We would recommend the following rig for bait fishing with sardines:
- Olive sinker ranging from 60 g to 75 g
- Bead
- Owner King stainless swivel N°5 or its equivalent
- 75 cm trace: Nylon Asso Classic 120/100
- Double sleeve: Double Brass Tube 1.5 x 3.2 x 10 mm
- Vmc O'SHAUGNESSY 9255 8/0 hook

We would recommend the following rig for bait fishing with cuttlefish or squid:
- Olive sinker ranging from 60 g to 75 g
- Bead
- Owner King stainless swivel N°5 or its equivalent
- 75 cm trace: Nylon Asso Classic 120/100
- Double sleeve: Double Brass Tube 1.5 x 3.2 x 10 mm
- VMC Circle Saltwater 3X 8382 hook

You should note that you will need to use steel wire at the end of the day.

Here is the rig:
- Olive sinker ranging from 60 g to 75 g
- Bead
- 2 Owner King stainless swivel N°5 or equivalent
- 60 cm trace: Nylon Asso Classic 120/100

- Vmc O' SHAUGNESSY 9255 8/0 hook or VMC Circle Saltwater 3X 8382 hook

Jigging rig:

We enjoy fishing with the Fisherman Spinoza Short 5122 T rod combined with a Daiwa Saltiga Z5000 reel. Again, we recommend the very strong, self-tightening Pr Knot to attach the trace to the braided line.

We would recommend using the following rig for a 150-300 g jig:
- 1-1.5 m trace: Nylon Asso Classic 120/100 (of course, you can use fluorocarbon for more discretion)
- Double sleeve: Double Brass Tube 1.5 x 3.2 x 10 mm
- Press Ring Shout 74-PR N° 7 welded ring
- Varivas Power Ring 150 lb split ring
- Assist Hook 10/0: medium
- Assist Hook 10/0: long

You must bear in mind that an Assist Hook can hold around 3-4 Bluefish, after that the protection of the braided line should be replaced. If you find yourself in this situation, we would advise you to get rid of the braided line and attach the rig directly to steel wire.

We would recommend using the following rig for a 300-400 g jig:
- 1-1.5 m trace: Nylon Asso Classic 160/100 (of course, you can use fluorocarbon for more discretion)
- Double sleeve: Double Brass Tube 2.6 x 4.4 x 10 mm
- Press Ring Shout 74-PR N° 8 welded ring
- Varivas Power Ring 200 lb split ring
- Assist Hook 10/0: medium
- Assist Hook 10/0: long

Here is the photo of the rig with a medium-sized Assist Hook and a stainless steel Assist Hook:

Rig with an Assist Hook 10/0 and steel wire to fish in the Sultanate of Oman
A Jig StrikePro Glow rigged with a medium-sized Assist Hook 10/0 and a long Assist Hook 10/0 assembled on steel wire.

We would recommend the following jigs:
- The Williamson Benthos Speed 150-400 g (especially the pink one!)
- the Williamson Vortex 150-400 g
- the Williamson Abyss 150-400 g
- the Hart Long Blade 150-400 g
- StrikePro 150-400 g

For your information, the size of the jig depends on water depth, the current and the wind.

We would advise the following rig for live bait fishing:
We would recommend the very strong, self-tightening Pr Knot to attach the braided line to the trace.
- 3 x Flashmer Tornado Strong N°5 82 kg swivels
- Varivas Power Ring 200 lb split ring
- Sinkers ranging from 80 g to 300 g, depending on the depth of the water and the size of the live bait. You have to rig a trace of around 30/100 (breakable) between the swivel and the sinker; that way you only lose the sinker if it gets caught in the rocks. The length of this “breakable” trace should be 1/3 times longer than your trailing rig; that will avoid your live bait touching the bottom.
- We would recommend using 1m of Nylon Asso Classic 120/100 or fluorocarbon for the trailing rig.
- VMC Circle Saltwater 3X 8382 hook
- Double sleeve: Double Brass Tube 1.5 x 3.2 x 10 mm
